Salutations! Today, we wanted to write about the bald eagle! The bald eagle is a really cool bird. Did you know that they are one of the world’s largest raptors? And that their eyesight is eight times stronger than ours?! Keep reading to learn more.
So are bald eagles actually endangered? Well, no. Bald eagles are no longer endangered. BUT in the mid 1900s, bald eagles were near extinction! Why? That’s a good question.
Why were bald eagles so endangered? Actually, there was illegal shooting, degradation and habitat destruction, and food contamination. FOOD CONTAMINATION?!? What?! Yes! Their food got contaminated by an insecticide called dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, but also known as DDT.
So, what did we do to help them? How did the bald eagles become safe again? People avoided pesticides and other things that could be harmful to bald eagles and made sure that they didn’t put any bald eagle in harms way We also have laws that you cannot shoot or hurt an eagle. Today, there are about 316,700 eagles in the world.
YOU can be a huge help! Just try not to harm any plants or animals, throw away the trash you find, and always think of new ways to hep the wildlife!
Great! And thank you for answering my question on your earlier video - what we did to help them to no longer be endangered. Beautiful birds!
Bald eagles! I love it. Isn’t it great they are no longer endangered?
